In this section, we will learn how one can apply for a student visa for the USA and what are the required conditions and forms needed before applying for the student Visa.

Now, if a person wants to go to a foreign country for his/her studies he/she needs a student visa and needs to be applied for the respective country they are willing to go to. In the case of the USA, it is important to know that two different government agencies are involved with international students.

The first one is the State Department, which is responsible for the visa application process and issuing the visa.

Once done with this and the visa holder arrives in the USA ground, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security takes over, whose work is to make sure that the rules and regulations made by the government for international students are enforced and applied properly to them without any discomfort and disturbance.

The USA provides three types of student visas namely:

  • F student visa: This type of visa is strictly for study at an accredited U.S. college.
  • J Exchange Visa: This visa is for participation in an exchange program, which includes high schools and universities.
  • M Student Visa: This type of Visa is for non-academic or training in the United States.

But there is a catch, before applying for the above-mentioned visa, one must apply and get accepted by a US institute of higher education that is also certified by the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP).

Once accepted at the SEVP-certified institute you will be required to pay the SEVIS(Student and Exchange and Visitor Program)and after paying the fees you will receive a Form I-20 or DS-160 from the institution’s international office which is further needed to be presented when you are applying for your student visa.

Fill out the DS-160 form online only but make sure you fill the form by providing complete and accurate information only, if provided false can lead to cancellation of the student visa which in some cases can also blacklist the country for you.

Once done with this form, you will be required to pay the non-refundable visa fees. Well moving further into this, you will be interviewed at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your home only.

NOTE: The interview can be scheduled according to the dates provided, which you can select at your convenience. You will need to bring the necessary documents, including form DS-160 confirmation, visa application fees receipt, SEVIS payment receipt, passport, photo, and form I-20(Certification of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status). Once approved you will receive a Visa stamp in your passport.
